Month: February 2020

Get Ready! 2020 Girls Season Starts March 2nd.

Important Season Information and Sign-Ups

Please review this information, submit your team/booster registration, order a suit and cap, turn in required forms, and get ready for the season!

The first practice is Monday, March 2nd. Meet in the pool by 3pm. You will need a one-piece suit, goggles, and a towel.

On Tuesday the 3rd, there will be a suit and spiritwear fitting for those needing to confirm sizes. Team suit samples from Jolyn will be available and Dr. Buss and Micah will have spiritwear samples to try on.

On Wednesday the 4th, following practice at 6:00pm, there will be a parent-coaches meeting in the lobby area just outside the main gym. All parents should plan to attend. (Note: this was originally scheduled for Tuesday 3/3 but had to be moved due to a space/scheduling conflict.)

1. Team Registration – Team Booster Club

Your support of the team through the Booster Club plays a critical role and benefits the entire team. The funds raised by the Booster Club, and the volunteer efforts of parents, help support the team and the coaches throughout the season. With recent budget cutbacks, your support is needed more than ever. We encourage all participants to please join.

This year, the Boys and Girls Booster Clubs have purchased two digital pace clocks (cost was over $1000) because the school and district would not fund these items. Quality pace clocks are essential to the RPT-based practices organized by Coach Berg.

In addition to providing much needed support for team activities and expenses including Senior Night, the team Banquet, athlete recognition, and the team website, each participant who registers will receive a team t-shirt, a team bucket hat, and free team member banquet attendance. The bucket hat is available only through the booster club registration.

Please take a few moments to submit your team/booster registration today. Your timely registration helps us update the team mailing list, order senior banners for display in the pool area, and helps to ensure that the team spiritwear can be ordered as soon as possible.

Booster Registrations are due by March 9th, 2020 in order for the spiritwear to arrive in time for the first meet.

Note: For those who miss the March 9th deadline, the bucket cap may not be available, but the banquet fees will still be covered for the team member.

2. Team Suits and Caps

Team suits and Team Silicone Caps are available to order from the SMS team store. Purchase of the team suit and/or silicone caps is optional. Participants are not required to wear the team suit or cap in competition. However, please keep in mind, all suits and caps used in competition (not practice) cannot have other team insignia or logos, or large commercial logos.

SMS Team Store

If you’re not sure of sizing, there will suits to try on for size before practice on Tuesday, March 3rd. Orders for suits and caps are also due by March 9th.

3. Additional Spiritwear

Additional team Spiritwear for parents, supporters, and participants is available for purchase directly from the Girls Team Spiritwear Store Options include sweatshirts, team t-shirts and racerback tanktops. Purchase of any of these items is at your discretion. Spiritwear orders are also due March 9th.

4. Physicals and Athletic Participation Forms

All participants must have their KSHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Exam (PPE) and 2018/19 Athletic Participation Packet completed and on file with the school athletic department office by Friday, February 28th, 2020.

Complete information is available on the SMS Raider Athletics page.

5. Parent Volunteer Sign-Up

Throughout the season, volunteers are needed. From supporting the team tradition of bagels on Saturday after practice, to team dinners, and organizing the team banquet, the team depends on your help. Please review the opportunities available and sign-up to volunteer, using the SignUp Genius links below. Thank you for your support.

Team Dinners

There will be 3 team dinners during the season. Athletes arrive immediately after practice. Each dinner requires a host/organizer and three helpers.
Sign Up to Host or Help with a team dinner.

Bagel Saturdays

There are 4 Saturday practices at which bagels will be needed.
Sign Up to Bring Bagels.

Team Banquet

The Team Banquet will be held on May 14th at SMS in the cafeteria. An organizer and approximately 4 helpers are needed to plan, set-up, and tear-down the banquet, which is held at SMS in the cafeteria.
Sign Up to Help with the Banquet.

Meet Schedule

The Sunflower League has released the meet schedule and all meets will be added to our event calendar (which also include Google maps for event locations).

As always, this is subject to change. We will endeavor to keep the schedule up-to-date on the website, but highly recommend checking the League calendar for the most accurate information. Use the “view schedules” tool to filter by Swimming.

Team Guidelines

The team guidelines are available online. You may also download a copy of the SMS Swim and Dive Handbook (pdf). Any questions should be directed to Coach Berg.

Team Communications

The website (including the event calendar) and the team mailing list are the primary communications tools used throughout the season. You should also follow the team on Twitter @smsraiderswim.

State Swim & Dive Stuff No One Tells You About

If your son wants to get a State t-shirt or hoodie, send them with money and encourage them to purchase it as soon as they get to Topeka. Last year, they sold out on the first day. Prices are as follows.

  • Short-Sleeve T-Shirt (Navy) – $19
  • Long-Sleeve T-Shirt (Graphite Heather) – $22
  • Hooded Sweatshirt – $30
  • State Programs – $3
  • Finals Programs – $3

There is next to nothing around the Topeka-Capitol Federal Natatorium for food or snacks. There is a concession stand at the pool, but lunch options are slim. If you need snacks, I’d suggest packing a few and bringing them in your car.

Booster Club “Thank You”

Thank you to the Aldeguer and Barreca families for providing team lunches.

Thank you to the Aldeguer, Barreca, Owens, Guthrie, and Snyder families for providing snacks for the boys on Saturday.
